Industry 4.0 is much beyond Smart Manufacturing. Smart manufacturing or smart factory focuses on optimizing factory performance. It not only looks at maximizing output but looks at all the elements of manufacturing. When all the machines, manufacturing lines, other relevant factory assets, and the material itself are connected, it is possible to predict the performance, balance the loads, and minimize downtime. It can help in quickly manufacturing custom products based on customer preference. Industry 4.0 on the other hand considers the entire ecosystem – R&D, Design, Development, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Operations, Customers, Service, etc. It helps in capturing customer preference, market intelligence, performance details of the product on the field, analyze the product performance based on the data analytics of the stream of data coming from the field, initiate changes based on the inferences, simulate the changes, and recommend changes in manufacturing automatically. It leverages IoT and is backed by the digital twin of the entire ecosystem and not just the manufacturing plant. Ultimately this will lead to “Mass Customization” which is the key charter of Industry 4.0.
