To successfully implement Industry 4.0, an organization must already have a solid foundation of four main components:
1 Tangible and intangible resources. Employees must have a sufficient level of qualification for working with information, and the equipment must be ready for processing and transmission of data or suitable for upgrading to install sensors.
2 Information systems. Provision of information in a form acceptable for perception, in a standardized convenient format. All data is integrated in the system vertically and horizontally. Built secure storage system.
3 Organizational structure. The company must be flexible: strategic decisions must be made centrally, decentralization is necessary when solving situational problems.
4 Culture of organization. The organization of the company must comply with the principles of openness, continuity of learning and democratic management style.

Implementation of Industry 4.0 is a long process, which is multi-year. It is about unleashing the potential power of the organization, by using new technologies.
Naturally, the degree of readiness of a company varies. However, that doesn’t stop one from implementing Industry 4.0. Depending on where the company is with regard to the business model, the implementation time will vary.
The company may not have any automation at all, or partial automation, no or little use of technology, isolated and stand-alone use of technology, lack of digitalization, etc. will take a lot more time to implement Industry 4.0. However, that doesn’t mean having the above would make the job easier. The only advantage in the latter is, the employees would be aware of automation, technology, etc., which makes implementation of Industry 4.0 relatively easier.
So, there is no simple formula to calculate the degree of readiness of an organization. It varies based on extensive set of parameters, and one needs to do a complete study of the current state in an organization.

The first challenge to overcome is to understand whether an enterprise is of a single mindset or a grouping of individual autonomous departments/production sites working independently of the enterprise vision.
This is perhaps the linchpin that truly determines an enterprise is ready to embark on its Industry 4.0 implementation. The goal is an interconnected value chain network that not only encompasses its own organisational structures across its businesses but that also embraces suppliers and customers within those networks.
The vision needs to be driven down from the enterprise or else risk a multitude of independent implementations of Industry 4.0 being developed within its businesses that don’t function as one.
