As soon as Blockchain tecnology evolve the Energy consumption will decrease, mainly for the consensus algorithm is also evolving, to decrease this energy consumption will also decreasing, Ethereum today is using PoW (Proof od Work) and planning to move to Casper a hybrid abordation = PoS (Proof of Stake) and PoW (Proof of Work) to finally went to PoS.
